Three hours, four stops and two Christmas markets. A beer flight brewed in the city, hot mead by an open fire in a Renaissance courtyard, Würzfleisch somewhere warm, and Stollen with Glühwein at the oldest Christmas market in Germany.
Dresden has around a dozen Christmas markets and they are not interchangeable. This walk takes the two that matter — the medieval courtyard market in the Stallhof and the Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt, running since 1434 — and puts warm food in between them.
Small enough to sit at one table, ask questions and talk to the other guests. No flags, no headsets, no coach.
Something substantial at every one of them, across four separate venues. Come hungry.
Local Table is one person, not a franchise. Book here and your money goes to the tour instead of a platform's commission.
Roughly two kilometres through the Old Town, all flat. Half the walk is in open-air markets in December, so dress for it. The order below is how the walk normally runs; market stalls change their offer from day to day.
The same beginning as the regular walk: a sausage and a flight of four small beers, 10 cl each, sitting down before we go out into the cold.
The medieval market in the courtyard of the Residenzschloss — open fires, no plastic, and hot mead. The Stallhof is the oldest surviving Renaissance courtyard of its kind in Europe. Note: the market charges admission on Advent weekends, roughly Friday afternoon through Sunday. See the practical notes below.
Between the Stallhof and the Neumarkt we pass the Fürstenzug, 23,000 Meissen tiles long, and come out at the Frauenkirche — which at this time of year has a Christmas tree in front of it and the Münzgasse market running alongside.
Indoors and warm: a Saxon classic baked under a cheese crust, served in the restaurant's own cap-shaped dish with toast.
The finish on the Altmarkt, at Germany's oldest documented Christmas market, running since 1434. Dresdner Stollen and a Glühwein — a different market from the Stallhof, and the one the city is named for in December.
Stallhof admission is not included. The medieval market charges around €5 for adults and €3 for children on Advent weekends, roughly Friday afternoon to Sunday. Weekdays are normally free. Bring a little cash; I'll tell you in advance whether your date is a paid one.
Vegetarians are catered for with advance notice. Not drinking alcohol? The mead and Glühwein become Kinderpunsch or hot apple at no extra cost.
Not included: Stallhof admission, bottled water, transport, and tips.
All photographs are from Dresden, on or beside the route this walk takes.
The market beside the Frauenkirche, on the stretch the walk passes through.
Somewhere warm to start, with the flight of four small beers.
The warm stop in the middle of a cold walk, baked under a cheese crust.
The sweet finish at the Striezelmarkt, with a Glühwein to go with it.
The tree on the Neumarkt, hung with Herrnhuter stars — a Saxon invention.
On the regular walk the dessert stop is here. In December the sweet finish moves outdoors.
Outside Watzke am Ring, Dr.-Külz-Ring 9, a two-minute walk from the Altmarkt and five from Prager Straße. Nearest tram stops are Prager Straße and Altmarkt.
I am there from ten minutes before departure. You also get a photo of the exact spot with your confirmation email.
Live availability comes from Bókun, the booking system this tour runs on. Loading the calendar connects your browser to bokun.io and lets them set their own cookies.
Rather not? Email hello@local-table.de and I'll book you in by hand.
The tour runs only while the markets are open. In 2026 the Striezelmarkt runs 25 November to 24 December and the Stallhof market 25 November to 23 December — so the four-stop route as described cannot run on 24 December. The calendar above is the source of truth for bookable dates. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before the start.
Private tours from €445. Up to five guests included, €89 for each additional guest, maximum ten. Private tours are arranged by email, not through the calendar above — write to hello@local-table.de with your date and group size and I'll come back with a quote.
Only while the Christmas markets are open. In 2026 the Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt runs 25 November to 24 December, and the medieval market in the Stallhof runs 25 November to 23 December. Outside those dates, take the regular Old Town tour instead. The booking calendar shows the dates that are actually available.
Sometimes, and it is not included in the tour price. The medieval market in the Stallhof charges admission on Advent weekends — roughly from Friday afternoon through Sunday — at around €5 for adults and €3 for children, with preschool children free. On weekdays entry is normally free. I will tell you in advance whether your date falls on a paid day. Please bring a little cash for it.
The Stallhof market closes on 23 December, and the Striezelmarkt only opens 10:00 to 14:00 on Christmas Eve. The four-stop route as described cannot run on 24 December. If you want a tour that day, email me and we will work out an alternative.
Four stops with something substantial at each — a sausage, mead, a baked Würzfleisch, and Stollen with Glühwein. Portions are set per guest; it is a tasting across four venues rather than an unlimited buffet.
Tell me when you book. The mead and Glühwein become Kinderpunsch or hot apple, the beer flight becomes soft drinks, at no extra cost.
Dresden in December is cold, and half of this walk is outdoors in markets. Warm layers, a hat and proper shoes make the difference between a lovely afternoon and a miserable one. Three of the stops have somewhere to stand out of the wind.
With advance notice, yes — the mead, the Stollen and the Glühwein are already fine, and the first and third stops can be adjusted. Vegan is difficult; email me first.
Private groups are arranged by email rather than through the calendar. Write to hello@local-table.de with your date and group size.
